He was a popular artist in Germany in the 1960s singing in German.
Gus Backus enjoyed the better (aka most successful) part of his singing (and also acting) career in Germany. While not one of his German recordings sounded as exciting as those done with the Del Vikings, he scored eight Top Ten hits, one even reached Number 1 on German hitparade. Eleven more of his German recordings charted, the last in 1967.
After his second marriage came to an end in 1973, he left Germany for a brief period of time, making his money in Texas as an oil field worker.
His third wife passed in 2001, and Gus returned to Germany. He re-married his second wife and spent the rest of his life in Germany.
His passing occured, almost unnoticed by the public, on February 21, 2019.
He was buried in the small town of Germering near Munich.
