THE STORY OF ...THE SAFARIS

THE SAFARIS also know as THE ENCHANTERS,THE DORIES,THE ANGELS,THE SUDDENS and THE FOUR EVERS...

Group from Los Angeles formed in 1959 as The Mystics by Sandy Weisman,Marv Rosenberg and Richard Clasky when the Mystics of_Hushabye. fame emerged this group changed their name to The Enchanters and signed for Orbit Records where recorded the sides_Touch Of Love/Cafe Bohemian. without success.

Moved to Dore Records as The Dories with a new member Sheldon Breier,they recorded_I Love Him So/Tragedy Of Love.

After this recording Sandy left the group and was replaced by the lead vocalist Jim Stephens.in late 1959 The Dories became The Angels and recorded one single on the Tawny Records owened by Lou Alder and Herb Alpert in this session the group was backing by Darlene Love & The Blossoms._A Lover's Poem(To Him) with Jim on Lead.

The B Side_A Lover's Poem(To Her) have the lead voice of Billie Jean Kunkel aka Bee Jee Kunkel who sang with The Living Dolls(see in this blog).

In April 1960 the group now know as The Safaris recorded on Eldo Records a tune writen by Marv Rosenberg_Image Of A Girl. this side reached #6 on August and the group have big Life perfomances and appeared on Dick Clark's American bandstand.

Followed the hit another single for Eldo_The Girl With The Story In Her Eyes/Summer Night. The A Side reach #85.

When with problems with their manager the group broke up. but Jim Stephens with other three guys form The Safaris 2nd group(see in this blog) and recorded in 1961 another single on Eldo_in The Still of The Night/Shadows. after the new group disolved.


Later Marv Rosenberg,Sheldon Breier,Richard Clasky with Lee Forester recorded in 1961 as The Suddens_China Love/Childdish Way. on Sudden Records.

In 1963 the guys recorded as The Four Evers one obscure single_Come Up In The World/Colors. on Chattahoochee Records.

In 1963 the original Safaris reunited and recorded their last single_That's Where The Difference Lies/Funny Thing Happened.for Valiant Records but the label only credited the recording to Jimmy Stevens.

In 1961 The Safaris back up to Ginger Blake (become one of The Honey's girl group-see in this blog) on the side_Spare Time. for Titan Records
