JOEY and RODGE with THE CRYSTELES_The One I Love

In early 1958 in Leetsdale, Pa the brother of Jim Drake of the white group The Tempos who have one-hit wonder with "See You In September." decided to form a vocal group for which he brought together several students from the Quaker Valley School, John Sradomski, Daryl Adams and Duke McGaughy and himself, Joe Drake, Ross Buck also temporarily participated in the group.

In 1958 they recorded two songs "The One I Love" / "I Should Live So Long" for Tabby records, this recording was popular locally and the group made many appearances and were regulars at Club Newman.


Above from the newspaper "The Daily Collegian from November 14, 1958".

Due to obligations with their studies, the group had personnel changes and at the end of 1958 it was a quintet with Dick Kruppa as lead voice, although no recording of this formation is known.

HANK AYALA & THE MATADORS_Betty Jo

White trio from Weslaco,TX first know as The Rocking Kings formed by Henry "Quique" Ayala (Lead and High Tenor), Eddie Ramirez (2nd Tenor) and Manuel Peña (High Tenor) with Leo Sosa on Drums.


In 1958 signed local disk Jockey Bob Dixon as their manager and this changed their name to The Matadors and cut a demo tape of the group,Bob send the tape to Jimmy Duncan of Backbeat Records who signed the group and recorded four sides in Houston.

In early 1960 the label released two sides under the name of...

Hank Ayala & The Matadors.

Backbeat released the recording with a picture sleeve but only with the Lead singer Hank Ayala in the cover.

The disc was very popular locally but the group never recorded again and disbanded in 1961.

TOMMY LANDIS with THE SPINNERS_Someone To Love

From the Jeff Kreiter guide,Tommy Landis with The Spinners a band formed in Torrance,CA in 1959 by left to right;Thomas"Tommy Landis"Gaglio(Lead Singer),Eddy Dotti (Pianist/Vocal) ,Tony Ruvalo(Drummer/Vocal),Larry Baldwin(Guitar/Vocal) and Carlo San Paolo(Guitar/Vocal).

They took their name from Carlo's 1957 Ford convertible(with spinner wheel hubcap wheels) and signed with a Mercury producer named Wally who send the band to a recording studio in Long Beach,CA.

In the recording session they recorded three songs_Someone To Love/Baby I'm In Love With You/You Belong To Me. the two first sides were released in 1959 in the Wyn label.

-Someone To Love. was a top 10 hit in Las Vegas and the band have a life perfomance in St. Louis,MO TV show "St. Louis Hop".

Listed in the Jeff Kreiter Vocal Group Record Guide as Curtis Lee & The Pictures, C. L. is NOT CURTIS LEE.

Also listed in the Complete Book Of Doo Wop as Curtis Lee(bb The Halos) on Sabra Records. this is another mistake.

C. L. & The Pictures were a white rock band from Houston,Texas. The original lineup featured Charles "C. L." Larry Weldon on vocals, Charlie Broyles on guitar, Trent Poole on drums, Leroy Rodriguez on bass, and two sax players,Leo grimaldo and Glenn Spreen.

From 1960 to 1966 the band have many personal changes and recorded a variety of Rock,Pop,Doo-Wop and Soul songs for Dunes,Sabra,Cadette,Kirk and Monument Records.
