The Maroons were formed in 1961 at Eastern State University. The majority of the group were from Louisville who were attending collage at Eastern. Several months after the group was formed, lead singer
Chuck Campell left the group and was replaced by Gary Edwards.
The group's first single was released in April, 1962,_Someday I'll Be The One/Don't Leave Me Baby,Don't., on the Queen label. The Maroons had one other single in1963_At The End Of Each Day / Just Checkin. Jimbo Label and disbanded in 1964.
In 1965 Gary Edwards and Bill Rauth formed Gary Edwards and The Embers which evolved into S.A.G.E. Ernie Donnell went on to play lead guitar with The Monarchs(see in this blog).
-Don't Leave Me Baby,Don't. is a Dion soundalike tune.

THE MAGNETS_ You Just Say The Word
White vocal group from Canton, Ohio managed by Stephen Guido and Kenneth Weber and comprised of Vincent DeMaria (Lead), Charles Errante (Baritone), Charles DiBella (Bass, later with the Five Discs), Sal Grippi (Second Tenor) and a first tenor whose name is unknown today.
In 1965 The Magnets recorded "You Just Say The Word / Surprise" releazed on the RCA subsidiary label, Groove records written by Stephen Guido and Kenneth Weber. Today it is believed that these songs were recorded on the RCA 1958 session and not made until 1965.There is a little confusion because in 1958 he recorded for RCA another group with the same name as The Magnets (see in this blog).

Presenting...THE SPARROWS QUARTETTE
Group from Queens,NY. formed in 1961 by Bob Freedman(Lead),Sam Wood(Bass),Billy D'Elia(1st Tenor),James Brady(Baritone) and Dominic D'Elia(Tenor).all they were catholics and jews and want recapture the sound of the early 50's rhythm & blues groups such as The Orioles or The Ravens.
In 1962 they recorded some demos on tape and the next year one of these songs_Merry Christmas Baby. with Dom as Lead singer were realized on Dom Broadcast label.
Now in 1965 Sal Mondrone replaced Brady and Dom formed the Jet Records label and released the first acappella of the group_Deep In My Heart with the B side_Love My Baby.

The group disbanded in 1969 and reformed in 1971 they recorded a complete album for Jet Records in 1974 under the tittle of_Sparrows Quartette-Rehearsal Session.
In 1973-74 Sal Mondrone recorded a solo recording under the group name of Mel Dark & The Giants(see in this blog).
Two more singles and two more LP's were released when finally the group disbanded again in 1975 later Dom and Billy form The Sharks Quintet and recorded three singles in the Sparrows style in 1983.the Sparrows members Sal,Dom,Billy and Bob reunited and have some life perfomances for UGHA in 1982.

THE PHARAOHS aka THE PHAROH'S
Interracial group/band (with a white Lead singer) from Pittsburgh formed in the mid-October of 1961 by juniors Baldwin high school classmates Bob Burnett and Dave Detillo with Jr. Leone and Willie Mcgee.
They were managed by Pittsburgh promoter Bob Mack with Jamaes Harvey and Joe Talarico who recorded a demo with the song_Betty. which received good air play on the local radio stations WZUM and WAMO.

In late 1961 have personal changes,Stanford Whiting and Greg Patterson joined the group and this recorded two sides on the Pharaohs label_Come To Me/If I Had The Power. but the label spelled the group as THE PHAROH'S.

They toured with Porky Chedwick and recorded one LP but their managers changed their musical direction and promote new groups as Tommy Jones & The Shondells and the album never was released,with this situation soon the group disbanded and finally Ron joined The Shondells.

THE DEVOTIONS_Rip Van Winkle
This group from Astoria,Queens,NY. started as a sextet in 1960 but soon Billy Crache and Ray Herrera left the group.the quintet consisted of Ray Sanchez,Bob Hovorka,Joe Pardo,Frank Pardo and Bob Weisbrod.
The Devotions auditioned for Bernie Zimming owner of Delta Records.he liked the boys and the group recorded in 1961 a reworking of an old standart_For Sentimental Reasons. and the Ray Sanchez original tune_Rip Van Winkle. but with poor promotion and poor sales Bernie sold the master to Roulette Records.
In late 1962 Slim Rose started playing_Rip Van Winkle. on his oldies show and this song soon was nÂș1 on the Time Square Records Top 100 Sales this success moved to The Devotions a have great life perfomances,in this time Roulette re-released the Delta single but without success.
In early 1964 Roulette enclosed_Rip. in an oldies LP and this song have a great demand,Roulette re-released the 1962 single and sold 15.000 copies only in Pittsburgh and soon the song charted #36 in the Billboard list of 1964.

Paul Bozung,Joe Gassaway and Georges May are from Rahway. Don Girvan sings baritone and plays guitar in the quartet. Paul Bozung sings lead and plays piano. Joe Gassaway sings tenor and plays the Bass, Georges May Sings Bass and plays the CocKtail drum.The Chancellors, voice and instrumental quartet recorded "i'm Coming Home" and the disc is off to a fast start in sales. Alan Freed WINS record show conductor known as "the king of the disc jockeys" has tabbed the record a future hit. The Chancellors recording of "I'm Coming Home" should be among the top-40 sellers in the country ."I'm Coming Home" was Written by Bob Crew and Frank Slade, authors of the extremely successful "Silhouettes" The Rays recording of "Silhouettes" has sold more than a million and a half copies and is still strong. Crew and Slade also wrote "Alone," a big seller by the Sheppard Sisters.They appeared on the Today Show and twice on Dick Clark's American Band Stand and had appearances at the Sands in Vegas.

Pop vocal group formed in the late 50's in San Diego,California and consisted of John Gummoe(Lead Vocal and Guitar),Eddie Snyder(Vocal and Piano),Dave Stevens(Vocal and Bass),Dave Zabo(Vocal and Drums) and Dave Wilson(Vocal and Saxophone) later Dave Zabo left the group and was replaced by Ron Lynch.
In March,1963 they have a number #3 in the charts with_Rhythm Of The Rain.recorded for Valiant Records.

THE VALROYS aka THE ESSENTIALS
Unrecorded group from Sunnyside,Queens,NY. formed in 1957 and consisted of Ray Russell(1st Tenor), Jimmy"HoHo"Pace (2nd Tenor),Jimmy Parker(Baritone),Bob Foley(Bass) and Sal Corolla(Lead).They recorded in 1958 two demos_Teenage Sweetheart/I Love You So.

In late 1959 Ronnie Pomerantz joined the group and this changed their name to The Essentials and recorded the demo_Teenage Sweetheart/Me And My Girl.
Tony Sepe of Lauerl Records signed the group and this recorded two new sides_The Night We First Met/Little Girl. But the label never released these two sides. In this time The Essentials singing in many local shows under the name of The Armores and finally disbanded. In this time Jimmy was involved with the Elites on Abel Records.
Later Jimmy and Ronnie recorded with The Newports (see in this blog).
DINO & THE DUKES_Love Is A Many Splendored Thing

In 1959 Frank Lafaro and Bob Croce from Philadelphia singing together and by 1960 when Ronnie Ditro and Jackie Donadio joined them The Dukes were born,as all were fans of Dion & The Belmonts they add Dino(by D-I-O-N) to their name.
They singing together until 1963 but never made a record only a few of demos songs later Frankie and Bob formed Frankie & The Fashions(see in this blog).

DION & THE BELMONTS.
From the Bronx consisted of Dion Dimucci (Lead), Angelo D'Aleo (1st tenor), Fred Milano (2nd Tenor) and Carlo Mastrangelo (Bass).named for the Belmont avenue in the Bronx they are considered the fathers of the white Doo-Wop groups and the white doo wop sound with the tune_I Wonder Why.
In 1959 they have their best charts with_A Teenager In Love. charted nÂș 5 and_Where Or When.charted #3.
Later Dion recorded as a solo artist and the rest of the group as a trio under the name of The Belmonts(see in this blog).

Group formed in 1957 in New York whose members went to school with Frankie Lymon,first called themselves The Lionels and then The Universals before changing their name to Dino & The Diplomats; Rafael"Dino"Cedano(Lead),Charles Humber(Bass),Woody Carter(Baritone),Jackie Jones(2nd Tenor) and Richard Morgan(1st Tenor).
In 1961 recorded one single for Laurie Records...
-My Dream/I Can't Believe.
-I Can't Believe.was part written by Ricardo Weeks who with Melvin Anderson penned_I Wonder Why. for Dion & The Belmonts(see in this blog) and as you can listen The Diplomat's song borrowed the Dion & The Belmont's tune.

THE CONCEPTS_Yo Me Pregunto
Hispanic acappella group from the Ferris High School in Jersey City,NJ. discovered by Stan Krause of Catamount Records and consisted of lead singer Amed Valentin,Juan Perez,Abraham Santiago and Edwin Rivera.
In November 1965 they recorded the acappella version of The Valrays tune(see in this blog)_Yo Me Pregunto(I Ask Myself). finally released as single wit the B side_The Vow. in 1966 on The Catamount label.

THE HEARTBREAKERS (Vik Records)
Paul Himmelstein born in the Bronx in 1940 from white jewish parents. Paul grew up hearing black vocal groups from the Morrisania section of the Bronx, at the age of nine years he sang in a TV talent show later he decided to join as lead voice of a vocal group made up of his neighbors who called themselves The Heartbreakers formed by Bobby "Count" Higgs (2nd Tenor), Henry "Rocky" Eli (Baritone) and "Torch" later replaced by Henry "Stoney" Jackson (1st Tenor) (from the Tru-Tones on Old Town records).
In 1956 the group entered the weekly amateur contest at Harlem's Apollo Theatre and won four weeks. Vanguars records released in may of 1956 a Lp "At Night at The Apollo" incluiding the group rendition of the Wrens song "Come Back My Love".Later this same song was enclosed in a single released for Fordham Records.
In the fall of 1956 the group signed local songwriter, Shirley Elliston as their manager and the group signed with Vik records where recorded in 1957 two singles "One, Two I Love You / Without Cause" and "My Love / Love You Til The Day I Die". Dee Jay Alan Freed liked the group and added this to his big easter Jubilee of Stars concert at the Brooklyn Theatre in april, 1957.

After some concerts and television performances, Paul got tired and left the stage at the age of 17 and did not sing more professionally.
The Heartbreakers 45's on Vik " Wanda" and "It's OK with me" were by a different group.
Henry Jackson continue singing with the Tru-Tones they back up to Lenny Welch on Decca in 1957 and as part of the V-Eights recorded in Vibro records in 1960. Also they have the unreleased side on Old Town records "Why Oh Why".

White group from Newark, N.J. consisted of lead singer Angelo Basilone,John Faliveno,Joseph Castellano,Joseph Stefanelli and Sam Monaco.
In 1964 they were one of the first groups that recorded on the Stan Kruse new label Catamount Records with the single_Vision Of Love. in a Duprees soundalike and_Oh Gee Oh Gosh. a rockin version of The Kodak's tune in these sides the group have a The Duponts as instrumental band.

THE FOUR GRADUATES aka THE HAPPENINGS
Group from Patterson,NJ. formed in the spring of 1961 by Bob Miranda(Lead),Ralph DeVito(Baritone),Tom Giuliano(Tenor) and Dave Albert(Bass).they decided to name themselves The Four Graduates since they had recently graduated from their respective high schools.by the summer of 1961 the group acquired a manager Chuck Rubin who send the group to singing in hotels as Crossingers and the Raleight Hotel.
In the spring of 1963,Rubin send a demo of one of Bob's originals_Step Into The Future. to Laurie Records but this label decided to take a chance on The Four Grads with a rhythm version of The Ink Sopts 1944 hit_A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening. finally released in the summer of 1963 on the Laurie subsidiary label Rust Records with the B side_Picture of An Angel.

The record receive little radio attention and the group was back to bookings and a short six month army forces.In early 1964 Rust Records issued one more Four Grads single_Candy Queen. written by Laurie Staffer Ernie Maresca,the flipside_A Boy In Love. was a Dion & The Belmonts soundalike.
