Bob was the eldest of 5 children born to Margaret and James Halley on June 30, 1938 in St Louis Missouri. He was self taught on Piano and bass and began his career in music playing local clubs in East St Louis. Playing in his own band and often times sitting in with Ike and In the late 1950’S He dropped out of high school and moved to New York City to pursue music full time.
Italian American composer Ulpio Minucci took him under his wing and helped him navigate the music business. Bob soon signed a recording contract with Mercury Records and performed on Dick Clark’s American bandstand in 1961. While at Mercury he wrote, arranged and produced songs for a wide variety of artists. He then worked for their A&R department.
