THE DUPRIES...Test & Thunderbird records


The Dupries were formed by sisters Annie, Joanie and Carol Duprey with their own band: Dick Schulz (Bass Guitar and Lead Vocal), Dave Pilz (Drums) and Dave Parpovich (Lead Guitar).


Their name were taken from an altered spelling of three sisters surname. in 1965 singing in many shows in the Wisconsin area and local Dj and producer Dick Hoff aka Dick Hiliday co-wrote the song_Baby Doll. for the group.


They recorded this in May, 1965 in the St. Paul, Minesota label Test Records and were re-released the next month in the Buffalo,NY label, Thunderbird Records with the B Side_Kissy Face.

The next year the girls recorded on the Test label as CANDY & THE CORALS the sides_I Should Have Loved You More / I Know.

In the picture at top left, Angelo Martino - background vocals and rhythm guitar. Top center is Joe LaRocca, drums - and top right; Walter Lee, lead singer and guitar. Walter Lee was the originator of the band. The name "Leeds" is an extension of his name; Walter Lee and the Leeds. In front row on the left is, Joe Zellers and on the right, his brother, Doug Zellers.

"Wand" records was a part of "Scepter" Records owned and managed by a woman named Florence Greenberg.

THE CATALINA SIX (Flagship Records)


Group/Band formed by Frank Sole (Lead), Tom Malin, Jerry Swede. Bob Novello, Rich Novello, and Morris Amato. present in the doo wop guides with their 1962 New Jersey Flagship's releases...

-Moon 2000/Would You Believe It.

-It Had To Rain Again/Sweet Baby Please Come Home.(re-released this same year on the Candlelite label with the A Side only as_It Had To Rain).


Later they recorded as JERRY & THE CATALINAS on the Veroona label...

-The Arabian Knight/Away From It All.

The band was born at a farewell party for the year when the singers Frank Sole (Tenor), Morris Amato (Bass) both of Wood-Ridge and Richard Novello (2nd Tenor) of Hasbrouck Heights met, they decided to form a vocal group and with the Help from Richard's brother, Robert Novello who had an instrumental band was added to Jerry Swede and Thomas Malin of Hasbrouck Heights, who played Guitar, and Robert on the drums and Robert himself as instrumental support.
The name of the group, The Catalina Six was chosen for the model of car that one of them had and was used in a publicity photo of the group.
His best recording was "Moon 2,000" / "Would You Believe It" which was rated three stars in Billboard magazine and was widely syndicated by local disc jokeys.

THE RUNAWAYS...Teensound

Group from New York formed by, Bill Reichert (Lead), Joey Gioia, Tony Petrocelli and Sam Wood.


They recorded...

-Kangaroo Hop / Teenage Style- Teensound-1963.

Unreleased  1963 Teensound sides...

-Laughing (With Tears in My Heart).

-Shake.

Group led by Bill Reichert (later with the Long Island Group The Dedications and Pittsburgh group The Holidays) In picture above, original members L to R - Bill Reichert, Joey Gioia, Tony Petrocelli (Florence Zagari's son), and Sam Wood who was later with the Sparrows Quartet. There was a 2nd unreleased record from this session - "Laughing with Tears in my Heart" and "Shake" which were later released on Ed Engel's label, Crystal Ball Records. Additional credit should also go to Rocco Zagari, Florence's husband who backed his wife's endeavors and loved the music. The group was originally called The Runarounds and toured as such for over a year performing throughout the tri-state area. The week before Kangaroo Hop was going to press and production, The Regents of Barbara Ann fame, changed their name to the Runarounds and released their record titled Runaround...thus the name change to The Runaways.

Also in many sites and Youtube the back up group in the first recording is listed,The Four Seasons but according to the CD The Del-Satins"Back From Lunch Vol.1 & 2" the back up work is by The Del-Satins.

THE G NOTES (Gino Sisters)


The G Notes were three sisters, 12 year old Linda, 10 year old Nancy, and 3 year old Coleen. Their father, Sam Gino, built a recording studio for them in his home in Thousand Oaks, California. And Ricky Page wife of record productor George Motola discovered these kids while watching them perform on an amateur show and brought them to George's attention.


In 1958 the girls recorded under the supervion of George and Ricky (who write the songs)_I Would/Ronnie(My Teenage Dream). finally released in the Motola’s labels Tender/Jackpot Records. these sides have a Eddie Cochran on guitar.

Motola form the black vocal group the Shields (with the solo porpuse to recording the song_You Cheated. originally by The Slades) with Frankie Ervin on Lead and send the G Notes and his wife as back up group to 1959 Ervin’s solo sides on Guyden Records_Believe Me/Why Don’t You Go?.

The last recording of the sisters were in late 1959 on the Form label with the sides_If They Only Know/Say You’re Mine.


In 1963 Linda and Nancy recorded as Jeff & The Gino’s on Mercury records(see in this blog) and in 1964 were members of the folk group The Youngfolk(see below picture) who recorded for United Artists.

Collen Gino recorded again in the 80’s for Vistone and JDC Records. Actually the collectors assumer that the three girls have some additional  female back up singer, speciality for their sister of 3 years old.

GROUP HISTORY (10)....


THE DEL PRIS (Varbee Records).


Interracial group(two white and three black members) from Pittsburg PA. Formed by Billy Cyrus(Lead),Wilson Rue(1st tenor),Jack Debirsh(2nd Tenor),Harold”Cowboy”Shields(Baritone) and Dan Carr(Bass).

In 1960 Jack and Dan singing in a group, The Del Pris this never recorded and disbanded soon.
The Legends were the secong group started by Jack and Dan with Wilson,Billy and Harold, they contacted O’Dell Bailey of Verbee Records who send the guys to the Glen Campbell’s united recording service where recorded four sides, the Baby Washington’s 1959 hit_The Time. The Chuck Jackson side_I Don’t Want To Cry. and the original tunes_Womp. And_It Must Have Been Love.

In November of 1961 the label released the sides_The Time/Womp. Under the group name of Jack & Dan first group, The Del Pris why The Legends name was already being used.

The disc have a big local acceptance and the group have appearances with DJ’s personalities as Bill Powell,Walter Raleigh or Porky Chedwick, also appear on the TV show “Teen Time” and for a brief time were the back up singer for Little Maxine Simmons.

In the summer of 1962 the group want release a second record and looking for a new label, but without luck, Harold disgusted leave the group and Billy join the army and The Del Pris finally broke up.

Their disc was re-released on the Restored label and the group have the unreleased sides_I Don’t Want To Cry/It Must Have Been Love.

SONNY DAY and The Versatiles_Speedillac


In early 1958 Joe Averbach owner of Fee Bee Records assembled a new group, The Versatiles built around Kripp Johnson and Chuck Jackson of The Del-Vikings, consisted of Kripp(Lead),Chuck(1st Tenor),Don Jackson (2nd Tenor) and Eddie Everette(Baritone/Bass).


They back up to Fee Bee's artist from Pittsburgh SONNY DAY (he assumed many names. real name; Davis Fatalsky) in his sides_Speedillac/Half Moon. released in March,1958 on the Chess subsidiary label Checker Records without any success.

BILLY JAMES & THE STENOTONES (Rust Records).

BILLY JAMES & THE CRYSTAL TONES (M.Z. Records).


Billy James (Real Name;Bill Nosal) was a graduate of Glastonbury, Connecticut’s high school and at the age of 16 wrote_My Prayer. Backed with_Phillips. released on the New York City label, Rust Records in 1961 as Billy James & The Stenotones.

The disc was on the local charts for 13 weeks in the fall of 1961 and reached a high of 2. The Stonotones were guitarrist and co-owner of M.Z. Records Mickey Moroni’s daughters with two of their friends from the steno pool at the local Connecticut power company.

In 1962 Moroni’s recorded Billy in his label M.Z. Records with the sides_Meant For Me/”It’s The Twist”. In this time backed by the white vocal group from the New Britian,Connecticut, The Crystal Tones.

-It's The Twist. is a sound-a-like_Runaround Sue. Tune.

The record was very popular and Billy toured the Northeast dong shows at The Bushnell and tons of record hops with radio station DJ's such as, Dick Robinson, Ken Griffin, Bud Stone, and numerous others. Many TV appearances followed including, Brad Davis, Tom Vatter, Dick Gallant and others.

In 1963 joined the band, The Reveliers. Managed by Ron Laundry of WDRC and later of Hudson and Laundry fame and they enjoyed some chart success with Lawn Records.

In the mid sixties he pounding the streets of New York hawking songs in the Brill Building. Some of the Billy’s material were recorded by The Angels and Bernadette Carroll among others.

1961 picture sleeve of The Trem-Los on Nolta Records with the sides_Silly Affair/Walking Along. present in all the doo wop guides and with a value of $40 in the Kreiter's guide (this guide not mentioned this sleeve).

Only available on Youtube the A Side, but this have a poor doo wop sound(maybe B Side have a doo wop or vocal group harmony sound).

GROUP HISTORY (8)....


THE MOTIONS (Laurie Records).


In 1958 at the Bushwick section of Brooklyn four guys form a group called The Emotions, Tommy Tucker(Lead),Larry Angeli(Baritone),Joe Basta(1st Tenor) and Richie Merrit(2nd Tenor).

They cut a demo_Mambo City. and began appearing at record hops and social clubs but in this time Richie left the group and was replaced by Eddie Povenelli. In 1961 they signed Marv Kalfin as their manager who had written two songs_Mr. Night/Make Me A Love.

The group recorded the songs and Marv present the demo to Laurie Records who in June of 1961 released the two tunes under the group name of THE MOTIONS (by the prior existence of another  Emotion’s group name).

With the 1961 Dion Dimucci and the Jarmels hits on Laurie Records the label give a little promotion to the disc and this only was played locally,the group became disgusted and disbanded soon.

Tio from Potlatch in Northen Idaho know as Kayo & he Trinities(took their name from the bible) formed by Gary "Kayo" Whitmore,Darrell French and Sandy Downings.


In 1960 recorded for the Coeur D'Alene, ID based label, Souvenir Records the sides_Kathy Jo/Walking To School With My Love.

Both sides writen by Gary. A Side song written for Gary's girlfriend Kathy Jo Atkison. B Side written for Darrell's girlfriend Pam (Kathy and Pam were sisters).
