THE RAINDROPS_I Remember In the Still Of The Night


In 1960 Pat Zito,Joe Nunez and Lou and Jimmy Benvento from the Williamsburgh section of Brooklyn started to singing in the street corners with friends as Eugene Pitt and his  Jive Five.

With the help of a friend, Sam Hawkins (of “King Of Fools” fame) auditioned for Goldie Goldmark vice president of Imperial Records. They singing an original song_The Sweetheart Song. But in this time they need a name, first choose The Teardrops but rejected soon and one day they see rain, Joe Quickly suggested their new name, The Raindrops.

Finally Imperial signed the group and bandleader and arranger, Leroy Kirkland, send the guys to the Belltone studios where recorded four sides. The label released in 1961 their own song_Sweetheart Song. With an uptempo rendition de the classic Five Satins tune_In The Still Of The Night. Without any success the group soon broke up.The group have unreleased sides as_Jingle bell Stomp released in 1989 on Avenue D Records.

Joe Nunez decide continue in the music bussines and form another vocal group The Jumpin’ Tones (see in this blog).

PEPE & THE ASTROS_Judy My Love

Interracial hispanic group from Brooklyn first know as The Mellow-Tones consisted of Pepe Rosario(Lead), John Zervos, James Mingo, Raul Echevarria and Paul Ward.


In 1961 recorded for Swami Records the sides_Judy My Love(Judy,Mi Amor)/Now Ain't That A Shame.

Well it seems that one of the new Heaven officials had just banned an Alan freed Big Beat Show which was to be held in the Elm City and The Nobles decided to do a song about "the latest attack" on Rock & Roll.

THE SHADOWS aka THE CARLOS BROTHERS

1958 Los Angeles,Bob Keane started Del-Fi Records and recorded to the latin Rock & Roll Singer Ritchie Valens.this charted #42 with their tune_Come On Let's Go. and Bob recruited other latin singers as the filipino/spanish Brothers Pete Antoniano and Jimmy Carlos with the intention of repeat the success.

Brothers Jimmy Carlos(17 years old) and Pete Antoniano(15 years old) from Los Angeles started singing at Banning High School in Wilmington under the name of The Shadows. They were very popular and Bob Keane of Del-Fi records auditioned the brothers and in September 1958 the label released their sides_Under Stars Of Love/Jungle Fever. As The Shadows.

Without success with this first recording the label issued in February 1959 _Tonight/Come On,Let’s Dance. As The Carlos Brothers(in these sides Ritchie Valens play guitar).and _It’s Time To Go/Little Cupid.

Finally in 1960 update the Valen’s hit _La Bamba. and have a big local success but without a nationally recognition the brothers broke up with Del-Fi and later signed with Zen Records where in 1963 released the Beach Boys soundalike tune _Meet My Town.

THE FOUR EVERS (Jamie Records)


White quartet from the 7th & Catherine street ward of south Philadelphia formed in 1960 by Paul Verdi(1st Tenor),Alex Barbadoro(2nd Tenor),Dominick “Steakie” Andriacchio(Baritone) and by a brief time a bassman (name unknow). They practice with songs of thir idols The Flamingos and The Casanovas but with only three members their sound were poor and soon recluted to Jackie Jacobs as their new Lead singer.


In the srpirng of 1962 with the help of Dj Jerry Blavat and Nat Siegel they were in the Swan’s studio to record the demo_Poor Boy/Summertime. Acredited on the disc as by The Venairs.


In early 1963 moved to Jamie Records and with the help of Joe Wissert and Bob Finizio of The Fabulous Four recorded_One More Time. and a dance tune_Everybody South Street. The label released the disc in march and a new dance was born, the group improvised a choreographer for their live shows.


The group singing in Baltimore where appear on the Buddy Dean show but with the popularity of their dance tune the group only receive works as dancers.

In late 1963 Bob Finizio contacted the group to back up Ernie Spano of The Four Dates on his Guyden sides as Ernie & The Halos (see in this blog). This is the last recording of the group they continie singing but with the british invasion they disbanded in 1964.

THE BROOKS FOUR,THE FOUR WINDS & THE TEAMATES

The Brooks Four were a white group formed in the Bound Brook High School in 1960 by four residents in the Bound Brook, NJ area Bob Paladino(Lead,Bass & Baritone),Frank Giaretta(1st Tenor),Frank Delisi(Baritone) and Bob Dileo(Lead & 2nd Tenor).
Members Bob Dileo and Bob Paladino were the Arrangers/songwriters of the group.


In 1961 the guys sang for school talent shows,private parties and participe with a vocal jazz standard_It’s A Blue World. in the New York Citty battle of the groups by the DJ “Murray The K”.In 1962 the two Bobs written_I’ll Be faithful/I’m Not Good Enough For You. Auditioned for Vinny Catalano who release the two sides in his Sinclair label.

In 1963 moved to Felsted Records where recorded three songs_Playgirl(writter by Bob brother Mike Paladino)._Jennifer. And_A Chance To Live. 



The label released the two first sides under the name of The Four Winds,the side_Playgirl. have a big acceptacion but with the assesination of John F. Kennedy the recording dead soon.

 Was written by producer and DJ Tom DeCillis for the Leukemia Fundation and produced by the Four Season’s team Tom DeVito and Nick Massi but never released.

1964 a new name The Teamates and a new label LeMasns Records where recorded in the Stea Phillips NYC Studio two new songs_Calendar Of Love(written by Mike Paladino) and_I Say Goodbye(written by Bob Paladino).the group participe in the NY Worlds Fair(a live color TV show) with The Sangri-las,Joe Williams,Ronnie Dove...and in the Clay Cole TV show.

In 1965 Bob Dileo leave the group for a solo career and the group disbanded soon,The Teamates have two unreleased sides_Darlene/Sad Boy. Written by Robert Paladino and recorded in the Stea Phillips Studios for the Four Season’s staff Charles Calello(music arranger ) and Gordon Clark(engineer) with a Four Season’s sound-a-like.

THE EXPRESSIONS_(Come Back) Karen


In the mid 50's in Dallas,Texas Bob Kelly started their singing group The Pipes with Bill Byrd and Neil Wood they singing in the college,private parties and talent contests and in 1956 back up to Mac Curtis in their King side_What You Want. but never record an own record and broke up.

In 1962 Bob Kelly owened his own recording studio and three guys came into the studio , Jerry Brown (Piano & Vocals), Jay Ramsey (Guitar & Vocals & Songwritter) and Frank Cole (Sax & Guitar & Bass & Vocals). Bob decided to record them and put out a record locally _Smooth Talkin' Woman / Look Away Love on Libra Records as JAY RAMSEY & THE COMTENPOS ( not present in the doo wop guides).




After this recording the guys form THE EXPRESSIONS and signed with Smash Records, a subsidiary of Mercury Records were recorded in 1963_Thrill / Come Back Karen.







Without success in 1965, they were signed by Sinatra's Reprise Records and cut _One Plus One / Playboy. and have the reprises's unreleased sides_Lonely Girl / Gotta Keep Movin (all these sides not were present in the doo wop guides). The Expressions started touring all over the country in 1965 and kept going for the next sixteen years.

THE THREE TWINS (Banana Records)


Early white group from Bloomington, in Illinois consisted of Al Douglas (Tenor & Bass/Piano/vibes), Art Iwan (Baritone & Violin/Bass) and Bill Bigger (Tenor/Baritone & Guitar/Bass).

In 1955, They have recorded their arrangements with Kahill records and released _Oh Baby Doll / I Want A Shoulder To To Cry On (no present in the doo wop guides).. The  record was very popular in the region and The trio make their home in Chicago when they aren't playing the states "live". They appeared on television and radio. In 1957, The Group won an Arthur Godfrey Talent Show.

A few months later, armed with their success kahill released a new single on this label_You'll Do It Someday / The Willow Weeps (no in the doo wop guides).For nearly four years the trio toured throughout the country and cut another singles in 1958_All My Dreams / His. on the Banana Label.

THE LEGENDS...Melba & Hull records


Robert Lee "Bobby" Weinstein grew up in New York City, and attended the School of Industrial Art in Manhattan. While there, he formed a vocal group, The Legends, with fellow students Marshall Samples, Ron Warwell, Richard "Chico" Brunson, Sampson Reese and Dominick Fleres.

The group won a talent contest at the Apollo Theater in 1955, and recorded in September of 1956 for the small Melba Label, "The Eyes Of An Angel / I'll Never Fall In Love Again. followed in 1957 by "The Legend Of Love / Now I'm Telling You ".Afer of this recording he group broke up and Bobby and Dominic joined The Kartunes on MGM (see in this blog).

In 1957, Bobby began writing songs with Teddy Randazzo, who had sung in another vocal group, The Three Chuckles. Their first major hit as co-writers was "Pretty Blue Eyes," recorded by Steve Lawrence and produced by Don Costa, which reached no. 9 on the pop charts at the start of 1960

Gee records were owened by George Goldner and the group  auditioned for him in the house of Frankie Lymon later they were recorded their first single were booked into the Apollo Theater with an Alan Freed show on November, 23 1956 with other Goldner's groups as The Harptones, the Cleftones or The Pretenders. In 1957 recorded as The Dynamics and disbanded.

THE CAVALIERS_Angel

The original name of this integrated Bronx group was the Satellites,founded in 1956 by Stephen Glaser aka Scott Stevens(Lead) ,Steve Weil(Bass) ,Jackie Morgan(Baritone),John Duff(2nd Tenor) and Lloyd Needleman(1st Tenor).Stevens and Needleman were white.

They Appeared on Ted Mack Original Amatuer Hour and Won when by internal problems Weil leave the group this singing as a quartet and change their name to The Cavaliers.

In 1957 Junie Smith join the group when they were discovered by Ed Portony Of Ivy Records he had them sing a contract with Ivy and scheduled them to record.Under the supervision of Mr. Portony the group recorded several demos as_Bench Of Love/Dance Dance Dance/I Found a Girl/Angel...many of they written by Stevens.


Mr. Portony sold the masters to ABC Paramount's new subsidiary label APT Records and this release in 1958 the sides_Dance,Dance,Dance/Play By The Rules Of Love.

The A Side_Dance,Dance,Dance was number 1 in New England and sold 250,000 copies.



They have the 1958 unreleased sides_Angel / Bench Of Love /You're Only Young Once /Too Long Ago / I Like Girls /I Found A Girl /Power Of Love /Loved In Vain /Gone Is My Love /I Wonder.

On their second APT release_Sunday In May/Why Why Why.Scott Stevens & The Cavaliers appears on the record's due to Steven's intention to eventually go solo.the other members were quite perturbed at this news and the group soon disband.

BRENT & THE SPECTRES ( Spectres Records)


Band from Chelmsford, Massachusetts formed by Brent Paul (vocals, sax, and blues har), Ray Tuck (drums), Jeff Thompson (lead guitar), Harry Boisvert (rhythm guitar) and George Shepherd (bass).

They released one 45 in 1964 on their own labe with the original songs_Oh, Darlin / Patricia. The B Side was very popular locally.

THE SILVERTONES (Elgin Records)

The Silvertones were a group from the Lyman Hall High School in Wallingford, Connecticut formed by Kenneth "Kenny" Marhevka, Peter "Pete" Gerosa, Donald  "Dino" J. Nitz and Richard Allen "Dick" Barbieri.


From left top: Richard, Peter. Bottom; Donald and Kenneth; The Silvertones.

In 1959 signed with Drum subsidiary label Elgin Records owened by Clarence Drum and recorded_My Only Love / Hey Good Looking ( Cool uptempo version of the Hank Williams smash ) in these recording were add Lin Ken and Bod Distasio. The A side was released as The Silvertones featuring Lin- Ken.

THE C-TONES aka THE DAWNS


Above rare and bad picture of  THE DAWNS from 1960 consisted of Top, L to R; Jim Carling and Joel Greenspan. Bottom, L to R; Stan Goldstein and Bobby Carling -  Center :  Billy Campbell (Lead Singer).

This group with another members were involved in 1957  with THE C-Tones on Everlast Records...

The C-Tones were a group from NYC's (Chinatown & Mulberry Street in Little Italy) formed by Mike Caminiti (Lead), Harry Solomon (Bass), Tony Lee (2º Tenor & Piano), Donny DiRienzi (Baritone) and Louie Matos (1st Tenor).The Group consisted of 5 Italian American teenagers and practiced in Columbus Park. The Group cut _On Your Mark / From Now On. On Everlast in 1957

In 1959 Oscar ? replacing Donnie and Stan Goldstein replacing Tony Lee. They recorded _How Deep is the Ocean / Why Did You Let Me Love You. for the Jack Gold's label, Climax Records.

In 1960 the group was reformed with new members (see above picture) but broke up in 1962 without made another recording.

THE MAMSELLES (Vik Records)


Early White girl group formed around 1955 from the Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. known  as The Sophomores consisted of Donna Glazier, Merilyn Luke, Marilyn Worsley, and Pat Strong.


The group receive women's independent award from Ralph Boswell at Fieldhouse Frolics in 1956 (see picture above). The girls have many local appearances on school contests and social clubs.




In 1957, the girls signed with RCA subsidiary label Vik Records and recorded as THE MAMSELLES the sides_He's Graduating  / I'll Always Thank You For The Sunshine. with the Buddy Cole His Orchestra.

Between 1957 and 1958 the girls were graduate fom school and the group disbanded.

THE FABULONS (unrecorded group)

The Fabulons were started in 1960 by Mike Sferrazza and Louie Tutone in Flushing NY .  Lou and Mike sang together for a couple of months. They both could carry a tune well but neither of them had great lead vocals.  Then a fellow in their crowd of friends started to sing along with them and had a great lead voice.  His name is Joe DeGregoria. So began the Fabulons. Joe DeGregoria (Lead), Mike Sferrazza Baritone), Louie Tutone (Second Tenor) and Bob Faccio (First Tenor).
About a year later they picked up a fourth member names Bob Faccio.  they were all 14-15 yrs of age.  They played at shows and dances in their neighborhood and in 1962 they got a manager named Lenny Rudnick.  Along came a writer named Henry Senatore and he wrote the song _Rene.

The group recorded the single in 1962 on an Ember Record Label  with the flip side song of _I Only Want You. of the Passions.  The record never got released but They kept singing DooWop for about 7 more years. The Fabulons also got together with two other guys named John and Vic Faster.  They were twin brothers with terrific voices.  John and Vic have since passed away and Bob Faccio died in the Vietnam War in 1968. Lou and Mike continued to sing with the Faster Brothers for a couple of years later.
